There are many things that disturb me about today’s brand of educational reform, but the most prevalent is how innuendo and facts taken out of context have been accepted as the norm. The best example is the term, failing schools. Everyone says it. Everyone uses it to justify some kind of new strategy for improving schools or trashing teachers, but just the use of such a term actually highlights how completely uninformed and biased people have become. Schools do not fail, students fail, so why don’t we all grow up or at least become honest about what is taking place in this country’s educational system.

There is absolutely no other country in the world that can even come close to accomplishing what American schools do in a day. In fact, the sheer size of our educational system is so hard to imagine that it gives so-called reformers an advantage. For example, “Waiting For Superman,” a sales pitch disguised as a documentary, is riddled with generalizations, half-truths, and facts taken out of context that intentionally mislead and encourage a negative opinion of American schools. Who gains when people are intentionally misinformed?

50 million school children go to school each day in this country and the vast majority of them do not encounter the problems alleged by the two students in “Waiting For Superman” so why would anyone want to misdirect the facts?

This site has been created to fill in the blanks that Superman didn’t tell you. Please feel free to add your story of success, achievement, making connections, and overcoming significant odds to grow.  Please keep them positive because the foundation of education lies in its optimism, faith in humanity, and vision of the future. Leave the negative to those seeking a fast buck. Although many comments may be anecdotal, each one is just as valid as the scare tactics brought to you by so-called reformers with questionable educational pedigree.
